Alicia Van de Sande is co-owner of The Water Market in Lunenburg with her partner Lee. They operate a family business with a small and dedicated staff, including their beautiful children, Simon and Hannah. Her curiosity about people, human rights, and helping others began at a young age. Alicia developed a passion for learning, volunteering and eventually a career in the not-for-profit sector. She has spent the earlier portion of her career working in the field of domestic violence as a front-line support worker, volunteer manager, and program coordinator. After moving back from Alberta to Nova Scotia with her family in 2011, she pursued interests in personal fitness and caring for seniors. Alicia served as a Senior Safety Coordinator for Lunenburg County for two years and continued to volunteer with community agencies dedicated to addressing gender-based violence. Currently, The Water Market business is the humble “sponsors of space” to We Feed Lunenburg, an organization that continues to inspire us to support our community daily.
Chair of Volunteer Management
Simon has spirited outlook to volunteering within his community. He began as a lifeguard at a small outdoor pool during high school, teaching him that small efforts can create big change. Afterward, he stayed involved as Chair of the pool’s board, continuing the larger work of strengthening community. During the pandemic, Simon volunteered with the IWK Health Centre, supporting patients and healthcare workers through an immensely challenging time. Growing up in a family business also showed him the power of community and sparked his own entrepreneurial spirit in the realm of finance. He’s passionate about helping more youth take visible roles in leadership and volunteerism and hopes to help shape a more connected, youth-driven future.
